Dear Interfaith Friends,
A Rose by any other Name. You’re warmly invited to gather for an Interfaith “Sema” at the Tenleytown Library which is across from Tenleytown Redline Metro Station near Whole Foods.
WHAT IS A SEMA? The "Sema" is a Poetic Love Feast - an invitation to Sacred Space. [We’ll be reading short Poems of Rumi and a few other Mystical poets → interspersed with Sacred Chant, Sufi Teaching Stories, and select “Dances of Universal Peace” [“Sufi Dance.”] Our theme will be “Interfaith Unity”.
THE DANCES OF UNIVERSAL PEACE (DUP) are a spiritual practice that employs singing and dancing the sacred phrases of the world's religions. Their intention is meditative - to joyfully elevate our consciousness and to promote peace between people of diverse religions. The DUP form originated via Murshid S.A.M. Lewis who was a beloved Sufi Disciple of Hazrat Inayat Khan. These joyous and devotional "Dances" combine Sacred Chants from the many world faith traditions with easily learned circle dance movements, some whirling. The "Dances" invite and evoke a group harmonization through breath, movement and chant - they are accompanied with musical instrumentation - and can also be woven with Sacred Story & Poetry [In a form known as a "Sema"].
TRAVEL & PARKING: The Tenley Library is located at 4450 Wisconsin Ave NW, Washington, DC - across from the Tenleytown Redline Metro Station. We will be meeting in the large 2nd floor conference room. There is some free parking on Sundays on surrounding streets. [Carefully read signs.] There is also a parking garage 2 blocks away at Whole Foods [$10 for two hours].
